Slitere Travellers’ Days on June 4-5, 2016

NW Latvia, Dundaga region, Slitere National Park, Livonian Coast

Both days the whole territory of the national park will traditionally serve as a place for active recreation and nature exploration on foot, by boats or bicycles under the guidance of experienced naturalists of Latvia.

The cradle of Slitere National Park - Slitere half manor house of Dundaga estate - has been chosen as a venue for the Travellers’ days this year. Funny and educational activities, artisans’ fair and workshops, music and other entertaining events will start at noon on Saturday. Visitors will be treated by the cooks of Valters restaurant, and the offer will also include fire-cooked soup, smoked fish, ‘sklandrauši’ (carrot and mashed potato pies), goat milk ice-cream and other local specialities.

Slitere is a place where the steep Blue Hills (the ancient coast of Baltic Ice Lake) form the borderline of the Highland of Northern Courland, which descends to the thick Undzava forests and provides a view of the Livonian coastal villages and even the island of Saaremaa. The former Slitere half-manor with its fields cultivated more than a hundred years ago, its buildings and the road network now serve as a home for the nature education centre of Slitere National Park together with Slitere Lighthouse, Oak-tree hut and the Blue Hills nature trail. The forestry building which was constructed on an ancient base and today houses the administration of the national park, the boulder buildings of the former half-manor and an untypically deep well are all situated in a park containing stately lime-, oak- and ash-trees.
